I believe that the direction and content of your therapy should be entirely up to you and your therapist. However, when utilizing insurance, the coverage is determined by the specific policies of your insurance provider. This could mean that the insurance company dictates the length of your sessions, the type of therapy allowed, and the number of sessions they are willing to cover.

Additionally, using insurance requires submitting a mental health diagnosis (e.g., Major Depressive Disorder) for billing purposes, which becomes part of your permanent medical history.

For Couples:

Most insurance companies do not cover couples counseling. Even when they do, one person in the couple must be designated as the "patient" and provided with a mental health diagnosis. From our perspective, the focus in couples counseling is the relationship itself, not one individual. Often, both partners are responding to the challenges within the relationship in a functional way. Unfortunately, the current healthcare system does not have a billing code or diagnosis for relationship issues, which can result in an unnecessary diagnosis being given to one partner.

When you pay for therapy out-of-pocket, you and your therapist can make decisions about the treatment plan and session length without the need for a diagnosis. There's no involvement from a third party, keeping your treatment private unless you decide to share that information.

This allows us to concentrate fully on what matters most: your healing and personal growth, without the constraints imposed by insurance regulations.
